An Economic Review
This photograph entitled “An Economic Review” was taken anonymously in 1919, and realistically depicts a poor family in Berlin during The First World War. In the foreground, we notice a wooden table surrounded by seven people, perhaps all related. In the background, to the left, a bed is shown with a bed frame, and an old blanket covering most of a crying baby. The background also consists of a tiled wall, as well as a center wall in in very bad condition (stained), followed by another wall that’s falling apart, and a clothesline in front of the third wall. This clothesline has three towels hanging from it covering what seems to be a painting with a frame. To the left of the marble well, there is another towel hanging on a hook, and there are little antique shapes and figures hanging on the main wall as well.
The people in this photograph are eating bread, proving their poverty, since they couldn’t afford substantial nutritious healthy food. During the First World War, there was very small economic growth, and overall, families were very poor. This image demonstrates this and shows the negative effects of the war which was the suffering of many families due to the poverty they had to endure. We notice in this photograph is that none of the people have cheerful expressions. Some are looking in different directions, while theirs are staring directly at the camera with worried or surprised looks on their faces. They are all living in one room, proving that they have to share a small space at all times because they can’t afford anything better.Their clothing is minimalistic, made of simple materials with no bright colors. The depressing colors of the photograph might symbolize the depressing times that families went through during the War because of the taxes and expenses.
