3. Interpretation
I think that the reason the photographer chose to take this picture is because it was a very important moment in Ottoman History. He/She most likely thought that this picture would be remembered because the Ottoman Empire won World War 1. Even though this image didn’t fulfill the destiny the photographer thought it would, it still serves an important role, maybe even more important than it would have taken.
This picture represents the beginning of the end of the Ottoman Empire, one of the world’s used-to-be biggest empire. The irony of this situation is almost funny but mostly tragic. Based on my interpretation of the symbols like the light, the colors the people in the photograph’s expression and posture I can conclude that this image is very important in Ottoman History. Through analyzing the message that this picture sends me is one that says that anything can happen and even though it’s not what you expect it can still be meaningful and important like this situation.
Fall of the Empires Photo Descripton and Interpretation
1.Identification
This document is a photograph from the beginning of world war 1. It represents the ottoman empire; one of the empires that fell during world war one declaring war on the Entente powers. Little did they know that it would be the beginning of their end. This picture is in black and white and it is probably the original because it isn’t very good quality. Even though the picture doesn’t show the whole scene it still gives us an insight of what was happening.
For example, the people in the photograph seem very serious, determined and maybe even a little worried. After all, it is war. The author is unknown though the main source is the Turkish government. It is a historical image. The legend indicates that this photograph shows the Şeyhülislam declaring a Holy War against the Entente Powers.
2. Description
The general subject of this photo is war. The perspective is from the side and the people are not faced towards the camera which tells us that they are speaking to a large group of people who aren’t in the image. Even though the colors aren’t on purpose since at that time the only black and white photos they still add dimension to the picture. They give it a more ominous and serious tone.
There is a lot of light in the image. I interpret that as though this might be their last moment of light because war is considered a dark time. Everyone’s posture is very straight, which shows seriousness and as I said earlier, their expressions are full of determination and even though they might be worried they are resolved.
